In the Book of Exodus God punished Egypt for the abuse they heaped on his firstborn son Israel. In the Gospels, the world again abuses Gods firstborn son Jesus but instead of punishing the world, he punished his son. Seem crazy? But by Christ death, God guaranteed the salvation of all who believe. But a distinction exists between Egypt (the world) and Israel (the saints) and judgment is still planned for Egypt (those who do not belong to Christ). This sign foreshadows the 10 wonders/plagues that follow. Moses uses a piece of wood to destroy the sorceror's snakes and God used a piece of wood in the form of a cross to crush the serpent.
